KHAWAJA BUKHARI, JAKARTA - The story of Pakistani girls traveling to Indonesia has gone viral on social media, with some blaming Islamic State militants for sharing the photos and links.

Only photos of girls, mostly in their teens, wearing hijabs have surfaced online, with only two of them seen in school uniforms. Photos of young girls in traditional Pakistani dresses as well as photos of Pakistani girls in school.

The photos were taken during a school trip to Malaysia and Singapore in 2015 when Pakistani girls were backpacking and sharing photos on social media.

A Pakistani blogger named Yasmin Bana made an account of the event on Facebook, showing hundreds of photos of Pakistani girls posing with their classmates during the tour.

The girls were supposed to be in their school uniforms, but the photos of Pakistani girls showed many in different outfits, such as T-shirts and shorts.

They are wearing hijabs as well, with one of the girls, likely the tour organizer, sharing photos of Pakistani girls on Facebook with the hashtag #PakistaniGirlsInSchoolHijabsBackpack.

The photos have since gone viral, with many criticizing the authorities for giving the girls permission to travel abroad. Some saw the trip as a typical Pakistani case of moral policing.

In September 2016, a video emerged of Pakistan's top Islamic authority, the Council of Islamic Ideology, trying to debate if a young Pakistani girl wearing a hijab could go to university, whether a girl could take a pregnancy test, and if she could go to a beauty parlor.

These cases have sparked controversy in Pakistan.

Pakistan's blasphemy law has stirred deadly violence, with scores of people killed.

Pakistan's transgender community has been in the spotlight recently after reports of the killings of transgender people, known as hijras, emerged after the shooting of one young woman by Islamic State (IS) militants.
